Join us for an early Friday evening session at the British Library as we celebrate some of the loudest and most colourful expressions of Black British music culture – Carnival, and the sound moving Carnival masqueraders on the street – Soca, born of Calypso. Curated and hosted by Lin Kam Art
 
Featuring 
 - Live performance by leading soca artist Triniboi Joocie
 - A Mas costume showcase with models presenting carnival designers Laura De Costa for Gemipo Mas and Keisha for RAMP.
 - DJs Tahzsa, Amy Francesca and Jada Pink.
 
The party kicks off from 6.30pm with Metronomes steelpan band, and the scene is set with a panel discussion The Road to Carnival, with contributions by Cleon Roberts, Triniboi Joocie, Clary Salandy (Mahogany) and Nicole-Rachelle Moore (the British Library), chaired by Chloe Mathurin (Lin Kam Art / Original Sounds Collective).

Tickets for the event are pay-what-you-can, starting at £7.50. 
 
The British Library’s acclaimed exhibition Beyond the Bassline: 500 Years of Black British Music will be open to visit on the night at no extra cost.

Carnival Warm up and Soca special is curated and produced for the British Library by Lin Kam Art, a creative practice that enriches lives through festival and sound system culture via public art, takeovers, events, workshops, residencies and programmes. Founded by Linett Kamala and deeply rooted in community empowerment it engages thousands of people across all ages each year through a range of exciting activities and programmes. Examples their work includes production for static sound systems at Notting Hill Carnival, the Lin Kam Art Sound System Futures Programme developing the next generation of leads for festivals, South Kilburn CarniVale, a music and wellbeing festival in NW London and commissions for the British Library and British Museum.
